Jimmer's breeding fallacy.

I still breed Pokemon to battle against some of my former coworkers, and one in particular keeps me on my toes (and breeding more Pokemon). Someone asks you a question, you think you know the answer...you won't keep looking. Someone asks you a question that you're unsure about, you go searching. And sometimes find answers that are unexpected.

Jimmer's 4.5 fallacy (until now):
The Everstone was improved in the last half of 4th Generation. (HG/SS.) You can give it to EITHER parent, to get that 50% chance to pass down a nature. Combining that with training items passing down IVs, HG/SS is even better for breeding.

Another 4.5 sidenote:
If you have parents from different countries, the Everstone trick won't work, but you are 4x more likely to get a shiny Pokemon. (Still 1 in 2000 chances.)

Eggs get produced faster if the parents are the same species. (Different IDs is a 70%, same ID is 50%.) If they're different species, different ID is still 50%, but same ID crashes to the ground with 20%...this checks every 256 steps, with some minor caveats that you can find. (256 steps is also the magic number for trigger egg hatching, that gets interrupted when you do things other than walk.)

Joel swears that he's putting his Pokemon on break for now, until Black & White comes out.

My latest breeding pain: getting Rapid Spin on a Tentacruel. Squirtle to Kabuto to Tentacool, as it was an egg move, and I needed males to transfer those...and females of Kabuto and Tentacool to breed true.
1. Male Squirtle gets Rapid Spin.
2. Breed a female Kabuto.
3. Breed 1 with 2, get a male Kabuto.
4. Breed a female Tentacool.
5. Breed 3 with 4.

I had to level up the fathers high enough, so they wouldn't lose Rapid Spin in the Day Care. It was a long process, and I wasn't quite happy with the Jolly Swords Dancing Tentacruel. Sadness.

How Black and White affects the current breeding...

I've casually been following BW announcements - I considered picking up a Japanese copy, but I'm more patient now. It'll be March - there are other things to do in the meantime.

1) I hike with friends on the occasional Sunday, and one of the friends brought along a former coworker who liked Pokemon, so we did some Pokemon trades at the next hiking meetup...I'm now out of spare Darkrai. (I have my Timid one, and the Japanese Darkrai that was won in a tournament.) Talking with new people about their Pokemon experiences is fun & different.

2) You also hear different rumors. I misheard my new friend saying nothing could be brought forward. When I had time, I started tracking down rumors on what was really going on.

Bringing Pokemon over into BW via PokeShifter
* Yes, you can import Pokemon from 4th Generation (DPP/HGSS).
* No, you cannot import items on Pokemon being brought over.

Bringing Pokemon over via Transfer Machine
* Unknown, regarding bringing over items.

Bringing Pokemon over via Mystery Gift
* Pokemon Battle Revolution, you might be able to still receive Mystery Gift Pokemon/items

It's tough for me, in some ways - I spent so much time collecting all of the berries (uh, except 63 - still looking!)...and now it looks like there won't be a transfer. The only real preparation for item transfer at all, would be gambling on PBR Mystery Gifts to come over.

Mew Download

Mew will be available for download from the Nintendo WFC, starting October 15th. It's one of those easy downloads, just grabbing it from your local wireless network instead of finding a Gamestop or Toys'R'Us.

It will only be available for HeartGold & SoulSilver, according to the official site.

It's level 5, and only knows Pound. Mew is one of those powerful, versatile Pokemon that can learn any TM. It's unknown if the nature is set, and no held item was mentioned.

The final day for the download is October 30th.

More details can be found on pokemon.com.

Jirachi download

From now until the July 16th, you can download Jirachi through the Nintendo Wifi Connection as a Mystery Gift. This download is available in Europe and North America.

Random nature, level 5, original trainer: SMR2010
Moves: Wish, Confusion, Rest, Draco Meteor.

Even though it has a different trainer ID than the previous Jirachi, it does block a second download. The upside is that you can get this Jirachi into your HG/SS game, which you couldn't before.

Joey's Rattata

This is only slightly a Pokemon topic - Joey's Rattata meets probability.

If you haven't played HG/SS, you might not know about his Rattata. "It's like my Rattata is in the top percentage of Rattata." He calls you often, to talk about important things...like his Rattata. Even after it's evolved to Raticate, he'll still have many many thoughts to share about his Rattata.

It got me to thinking - what IS a top percentage Rattata? How difficult would it be to just stumble across one?

First, we need to start with what a top Rattata would have for stats. As we're in the Egg Moves blog, let's assume Joey is talking about IVs - anyone can train a good Rattata with EV training.

Second, each of the 6 stats range from 0-31. My ideal Rattata would have some specific IVs in certain stats, but let's just assume for quick math, we just care about the best ones we could expect out of 100 Rattata, if they were all naturally occurring. Amongst my friends who are serious about IVs, ideally, they get all 31s. They'll settle for 28+, honestly...so we'll work from that point.

Probability is a longer topic, but it breaks down to some quick math if you have Excel handy - just use BINOMDIST function. (There's a 4/31 chance of getting a 28 or higher which would count as a success. Figure out the number of successes out of 6, and you're there.)

If we believe in getting a 28 or higher qualifies - 3 IVs gets us to top 2%. Sadly, it takes us 4 to make that top 1%. It almost takes us to the top Rattata in a thousand!

If you like 30+ IV stats, a top Rattata would only need 2 IVs of that range to make the top 2%. Sadly, that top percent is elusive...it would take 3 to break into it - making it a one in a thousand kind of Rattata.

Breeding that kind of Rattata takes dedication, checking the right parents and re-breeding as the children develop into stronger genes than their folks. With judicial use of EV training items mentioned in the previous post, it's more likely in less time. Good luck!

P.S. As an odd heads-up, I was breeding Rattata for stats, using two EV training items instead of item+everstone. I assumed that each stat would get locked in from the item, but in a couple of circumstances, only one make it in! I'm guessing the third stat donated from the parents can overwrite the "lock-in" stat. Interesting!

Breeding in HG/SS

I'll admit, I do most of my breeding in my Diamond game still. I have all 493 Pokemon in the PokeDex - if I no longer have a Pokemon, GTS is a friendly one-stop shop. It's also linked to my Pokemon Ranch...if not GTS, my Ranch generally has something (beyond the hundreds of Pokemon I've put on there).

But HeartGold and SoulSilver has a powerful motivator: IV breeding

IV (Inherent Value) stats represent the genetic traits of a Pokemon. The egg receives random IVs to start with, and then starts shuffling in up to 3 random stats from its parents. Sometimes those 3 stats overwrite each other, so it could be as few as only 1 stat from the parents. Oh, sadness.

It still means that if you have parents with good stats, you're more likely in general to have better babies. (Likewise, if the parents have bad stats...let's not go there.) But it was still random on what was passed on, until now.

The way it is now: if you give the parents the correct EV training items (Power Weight, Power Anklet, Power Lens, Power Band, Power Bracer, and Power Belt) that parent WILL pass down that stat.

I recently bred some Pokemon - I wanted a high attack stat, and good speed. The father didn't have very good stats, except for his 31 attack. I gave him the Power Bracer, gave the mother an Everstone (so she'd pass along her Nature,)...and bang. Every single egg resulted in a 31 attack, out of the 24 eggs created. (31 for an IV is the highest you can get - 0 is the lowest.) Out of those eggs, I found one with the right Nature and good Speed.

Again, this trick only works in HG/SS. It probably means I'll be doing more breeding over there, but it's hard to give up my habits - knowing where and how fast it takes to EV train is completely different in HG/SS.

Gotta Catch 'Em All

Several years ago while playing the Ruby game I had started a project to catch all the Pokémon I was almost finished when the cartridge got whipped out. Now after completing Diamond, Pearl, Platinum & Silver I think it’s time again to try to Catch ‘Em All.

I met a guy at the VGC Qualifier that had a cartridge dedicated to holding one of all the Pokémon. It was impressive and the project appeals to the completist in me to finish.

I am thinking I have most of the Pokémon on the other cartridges so many of them I can just trade over to my Silver cartridge to hold all of the Pokémon, The reason I chose the Silver cartridge is Ill need lots of extra Pokémon 493 I think to trade and with Silver I have a nice steady stream of Pokémon coming in without much effort, These are the Pokéwalker, Bug catching contest, breeding, GTS & the Safari Zone.

Because there are so many Pokémon, I am going to focus on 1 box at a time. A box holds 30 Pokémon.

Don’t be surprised if I start asking for trades on middle evolution Pokémon!

Here is a list of all the Pokemon:

Post-VGC Qualifier

Sadly, Joel and I didn't play. He got there at 10am, and slacked around inside before getting in line. I got there around noon, and he'd already gotten out of line to hang out inside...and download some extra Shiny Eevee. (Basically you have a HG/SS game, download it, trade Eevee out, reset the entire game, then play through until you have the Poke-dex.)

The line was huge at noon, with several hundred already in line for registration at 1. I was planning on hanging out inside, and then head into line as it got shorter, but they cut the line at 1:30 when it was still outside - if you weren't in line by that time, you weren't playing. (No announcements inside - there were some sad players.)

I did get to play a lot with the Pokewalker though - it was the first time I connected with more than 10 Pokewalkers. After 10 connections, instead of getting an item you get Watts (I received anywhere from 31-99 Watts per connection). In addition, if you have access to Viridian City on the second map, the final 10 connections at the ones that show up in the Trainer Hall there.

Pokewalker was pretty social - I can easily imagine the throngs of Pokewalkers at PAX this summer. Maybe that will rack up enough Watts to close out my Pokewalker courses.

May 8th, Seattle Center

The VGC (Video Game Championship) qualifier is taking place on May 8th at the Seattle Center - I'll probably skip playing this year, but the www.pokemonvgc.com website does mention "You'll find plenty of
opportunities to face off against other Pokémon Trainers, plus you'll have
the chance to receive a special Shiny Pokémon!"

I'm hoping that means I don't have to play to get the Eevee. I'll probably pack a team just in case though.

More Pokewalker

Finding Pokemon using the Radar is actually a bit cooler. Some of the high-number-of-steps-required Pokemon might not show up - if you don't mind dumping your Watts into your HG/SS game, you can jump out and jump back into your stroll - it'll reset the Pokemon that you can find.

Not only that, you can also switch routes - enabling your high step count to transfer, as long as it is the same day.

In either case, you'll still need to regain the 10 Watts needed to use the Pokeradar.

I've been pretty religiously keeping a Pokemon in the Pokewalker - you'll need a lot of Watts to unlock the courses.

Pokewalker

I've done a little research on what the Pokewalker can do, expanding the HeartGold/SoulSilver games.

Basically, you can transfer a Pokemon over from the main screen of your HG/SS game, and then pull it back over later, bringing back with it whatever you found in the Pokewalker (Pokemon, items, and possibly Watts?).

Feature 1: Gain experience and happiness
It's maxed out at one level for the Pokemon in there. 1 step = 1 experience. Not that great for low-level Pokemon, but tolerable (free xp!) for higher level Pokemon. The Pokemon will also gain happiness, which can help some evolutions (and find more Watts).

Feature 2: Gain items and Watts
Each course has its own items that can be found as you walk. There's a chance as you walk around that your Pokemon will pick up an item, sometimes Watts. The happier your Pokemon is, the more Watts it will find. (Steps also figure into Watts.)

Feature 3: Find wild Pokemon with the Pokerader (costs Watts, may need some steps)
This is a simplified battle system of Attack/Dodge/Catch, similar to Safari Zone found in previous games. There's only 6 different Pokemon per course, but you can only find 3 different ones each time you load a Pokemon into your Pokewalker. It'll take you a certain amount of steps to have some Pokemon show up - reduced if you have a preferred Pokemon in your Pokewalker - every route has 3 Pokemon-types that just work better than others. Also, if the Pokemon you bring into the Pokewalker matches any of those types, it gives you a greater chance to find rarer Pokemon.

Feature 4: Item Dowser (costs Watts)
You can spend Watts on item-finding - check the moving grass, get some items. Pretty light activity. (You're also limited to how many items you can carry.)

Feature 5: Connect Pokewalkers
You can have your Pokewalker connect to a friend's Pokewalker, allowing you to trade items. When you connect, you'll also send a copy of your team in your HG/SS game, so your friend can battle against your current team (and vice versa). You'll only be able to connect with each Pokewalker once in a day.

Watts do reset when you transfer out, but I don't know the specifics...they might even reset daily. Certain courses will become unlocked as you gain more Watts, which suggests that you can transfer Watts into your HG/SS game. I thought I read that you can connect Pokewalkers to trade courses with friends, but couldn't find any of that information.

HeartGold / SoulSilver anticipation

It's 2-1/2 weeks away, and I've been considering the release...

Good:
I've heard the graphics look amazing.
16 badges.
The trainer "Red" has level 80+ Pokemon - that is pretty high end...I'm guessing there's enough experience points in the storyline to merit that kind of battle.
Lucky Eggs can be found starting with level 41 Pokemon with Pickup.
Auto-leveling Pokemon for one-on-one battles, through the regular wireless. This is a boon if you want to play a random pick-up game.

Unknown:
Pokéwalker - is it distracting, or a welcome addition?

I pre-ordered SS, so I could get the Lugia figure. I never got into Ho-Oh - even in the TFG, Lugia was so good-looking. And I wanted a Vulpix/Ninetales, which is exclusive to SS.

Starter Pokemon - Feraligatr (Totodile). He was cool in the TFG, and his move-set gives the most variety in types, followed by Typhlosion. Meganium, well, tough love.

What are you looking forward to?

Jirachi download

Officially announced today - Jirachi download for Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, at GameStop locations around the US from Saturday February 27th - March 13th.

Jirachi was previously only released in the US as a special promo Pokemon, included on a bonus disc for Pokemon Colosseum.

This new promotional download will feature a level 5 Jirachi, allegedly holding a Leichi Berry. (I was hoping to finally see berry 63 released - that one was only released through a special download in Japan.)

Announcement is here:

Shiny Pichu download

Between January 30th and February 14th, you can download a shiny Pichu into your Diamond/Pearl/Platinum game. This will take place in GameStop stores around the US...

Later, if you transfer it into your HeartGold or SoulSilver, it lets you meet the spiky-eared Pichu.
